What this curriculum teaches

Able Marga’s Functional English curriculum develops communication and reading readiness through picture-based recognition of meaningful everyday words. It belongs to a structured six-level functional curriculum for children with autism and other special needs aged 2+.

The curriculum begins with receptive language and picture-to-word matching, then progresses toward functional reading and writing for everyday use.

What’s inside Level 1

Level 1 uses dual picture-and-word representation and cut-out word cards. Units include Words That Match and Family Words. The focus is receptive word recognition, with no writing required except optional adult-scribed name boxes.

Who this level is for

Choose levels by current ability rather than age or school class. Level 1 is designed for a learner who: No reading or writing is required; the learner may point to familiar pictures when asked.

A child can correctly be on different levels in different subjects. Use the Able Marga Placement Guide to select each subject independently.

How you’ll teach it

Skills are broken into small, teachable steps. The programme is ABA-informed, IEP-aligned, UDL-aware and AAC-friendly. Activities use clear visual choices and prompt success before support is gradually faded. At the foundation level, a child can respond by pointing, matching, circling or placing a card instead of relying on reading or writing.
